On 26th July 1956, two atlantic liners, the Italian 'Andrea Doria' approaching New York and the Swedish 'Stockholm' outward bound for Europe - were nearing each other off the Nantucket lightship. Both ships were proceeding at full speed in a calm sea, to their navigating officers they appears to be going to pass one another on parallel opposite courses with a wide safety margin. However, the Stockholm's prow sliced through the Andrea Doria's hull.... A tense court inquiry, lasting four months, took place in New York; each side accused the other of negligence. A final judgment was never reached: the case was settled out of court. The author focuses attention on how the collision occurred and why the Andrea Doria sank.
